Dynamite, fireworks, and Dixie Heights. They all have one thing in common — explosiveness.

The Colonels delivered big play after big play Friday night, opening Class 5A, District 5 action with a 62-13 rout of Scott in Taylor Mill.

Not a single Dixie touchdown came from close range. The shortest was from 14 yards out, with the rest covering distances of 17, 29, 38, 62 (twice), 63, 66 and 75 yards.

Quarterback Mason Fields threw four touchdown passes, two to Parks Vonderhaar, one to Hudson Morris and another to Henry Waters. Levi Gilliland, Eric Brown and Nishawn Golsby added rushing scores, while the defense chipped in with two interception returns for touchdowns.

“We identified what they did well and thought they were consistent with it,” Fields said. “We felt we could take advantage of the matchups their defense gave us, based on how they lined up, allowing us to execute and make plays. That’s what we practiced all week.”

Fields finished 5-of-9 for 241 yards, with Vonderhaar his top target, recording two catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Most of the scoring came early as the Colonels raced out to a 43-7 lead after the first quarter. A touchdown in the second quarter made it 50-7 at halftime and started a running clock. By the end of the third, the margin had grown to 56-7, Dixie’s largest lead of the night.

It wasn’t just offense. The defense came up with three interceptions, two from Golsby, including one he returned for a touchdown, and one from Morris, who also ran his back for a score.

“We like our matchups and just kept rolling,” Dixie Heights head coach Pat Burke said. “Our offense executed well, and our defense was able to get pressure and cover well, which led to those three interceptions.”

Scott showed sparks throughout the night. Trey Cook connected with Peyton Zinser for an 86-yard touchdown in the first quarter, then added a scoring pass and a 33-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth. Cook completed 14 passes for 152 yards, but the Eagles were limited to 130 yards on the ground.

“We knew coming into the game we were going to be outmatched,” Scott head coach Justin Franklin said. “We have four sophomores in the secondary and four on the perimeter on offense. Dixie is bigger, stronger, faster, but we’re getting there. We had a great offseason, just not close enough to compete with teams with bigger and stronger athletes. My message after the first quarter was to stay positive.”

The Eagles were without senior Aaron Hampton due to an injury in their previous game. He led the team on the season with 14 catches for 407 yards and seven touchdowns.

Scott (2-3, 0-1) was scheduled for a bye next week but will instead resume their weather-delayed game at Clay County, picking up at halftime with the Eagles trailing 20-14 in Manchester.

Dixie Heights (2-4, 1-0) is hoping to turn the corner after an 0-4 start, following last week’s 46-24 win over Henry Clay with another statement victory. Next Friday comes an important district tilt with Cooper at home.
