Even though the primary isn’t until May of next year, the Fort Thomas mayor’s race is already heating up.
Sharon MacKnight said in a press release that she is throwing her hat into the race for Fort Thomas mayor in the 2026 election.
MacKnight said her campaign is rooted in transparency, local values and ensuring residents have a voice in the decisions that shape their city, all while striving to be fiscally responsible with the city’s finances.
“It would be an honor to serve the community where my husband, Rich, our son, Richie, and I were born, raised, and have always called home,” MacKnight said.
MacKnight became involved in local government during the One Highland Development project, as she grew increasingly concerned with what she described as the rapid pace of development and the lack of community input.
MacKnight said in a release for her candidacy that she will continue to work for better transparency, such as when she pushed to have public meetings recorded.
“I’m glad that the city is finally recording all meetings, but we can do better,” MacKnight said. “As mayor, I’ll ensure timely and user-friendly access to all city records and videos, and I’ll work closely with the city council to make community outreach a top priority.”
Her campaign focuses on “preserving Fort Thomas’ historic charm, parks, and green spaces, while guiding thoughtful development that reflects the community’s values and remains fiscally responsible,” according to the release.
“I’m not a career politician,” MacKnight said. “I’m your neighbor. Fort Thomas shines because of its people and local businesses, both big and small, and that’s what makes our town truly unique. Together, we can preserve the historic charm, parks, and green spaces that set us apart from ‘Any Town, USA,’ while thoughtfully guiding development that reflects our shared values and remains fiscally responsible. Together, we can keep our small-town spirit alive while planning responsibly for the future.”
MacKnight will also have to file with Campbell County as a candidate in order to appear on the ballot in the May 2026 primary election. Candidates cannot file with the county until Nov. 5, 2025, and they have until Jan. 9, 2026.
Fort Thomas Councilmember Andy Ellison has also announced his intent to run for mayor.
