Dayton is getting a new public works building.

The city council approved a resolution on Tuesday, allowing the mayor to enter into a contract to purchase property located at 1112 Third Avenue, across from the city building.

“As you all know, we are looking at building a new public works building directly across the street,” Fossett said. “We need this property for parking and possibly for salt. The woman who owns this property used to live there. Her husband died. She moved to Cincinnati, and she was interested in selling it.”

There was a trailer on the property, and the owner had been unable to keep up with the maintenance. A code enforcement lien was on the property. The city discussed the issue with her, and they came to an agreement to pay $16,000 for the property and to waive the code violations, he explained.

The city’s old community garden, located near the property, would be cleaned up to provide parking space for the new facility. Members of the community garden had been notified of the cleanup, Fossett said. Council member Beth Nyman, a former member of the garden, asked him to share the information about the clean-up on the city’s website to ensure more residents know about it.

Council approved the resolution. Once the property has been purchased, plans for the new building will get underway.
