The office of Gov. Andy Beshear has ordered flags at state buildings to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Pope Francis until sunset on the day of the Pope’s interment. When the internment will occur has yet to be determined.
“Pope Francis earned the title ‘The People’s Pope’ by showing kindness and mercy, standing for love above hate and extending a hand to help all people,” said Beshear in a press release. “He led by example, and his humility and dedication to God brought people together. His loss is great, but his impact is greater.”
Francis, history’s first Latin American pontiff, died Monday at 88.
Although it is not required by law, “Gov. Beshear encourages all individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute,” according to a press release from the governor’s office.
