The city of Covington has begun work on converting Scott and Greenup Streets from their current one-way configuration into two-way roads between 12th and 20th Streets.

The project will also extend the KY-17 designation west to Madison Avenue, moving the ownership of that stretch of road from the city to the state.

As part of the project, Scott and Greenup Streets and the affected areas of Madison Avenue will see resurfacing work and improvements related to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Changes will also be made to some of the roads’ signage and traffic signals.

The project is funded through state appropriations and is expected to cost about $3.36 million. City officials have touted it as a way to calm traffic, improve walking and safety infrastructure, and bolster economic development.

“Finally, this long-discussed and long-planned conversion is coming to fruition,” City Manager Ken Smith said in a city announcement. “For some time, neighborhood leaders have been concerned about the volume and speed of traffic flying past their houses on these tight streets, and with this project we will improve safety for everybody, including pedestrians, kids playing, people getting in and out of their parked cars and bicyclists.”

Statements from city officials late last year indicated the city hopes to complete the project sometime this spring. You can learn more about the project by reading the city’s announcement.
