With his excellence in athletics and in the classroom, Covington Catholic’s Brady Hussey has won the 11th Annual Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones Award.
Hussey is a two-sport standout in basketball and tennis, and maintains a 3.5 GPA.
For the Colonels basketball team, he’s averaging 13.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game as CovCath currently sits at 21-5 and ranked No. 6 in the state in the latest Kentucky media poll. His efficiency on the offensive end is vital for the Colonels, shooting 51% from the field, 50% from the 3-point line and 88% from the free throw line. He’s knocked down a team-high 57 three-pointers this season. He’s close to hitting the 1,000 point mark for his career, currently at 953 career points.

Hussey is also often called upon to guard the opponents’ best player. As a junior, Hussey was named to the 2023 Northern Kentucky All-Star Team and was a member of the 2022 KHSAA Sweet 16 All-Tournament team as a sophomore.
In tennis, Hussey was the No. 1 singles player on last season’s state championship-winning CovCath tennis team. He had his individual state championship bid derailed by a late-season basketball injury to his ankle that kept him from being fully heathy against Kentucky’s best tennis players. He still made the state semifinals for the second year in a row. He was also named 9th Region Player of the Year (2021, 2022 & 2023), 1st Team All State (2022 & 2023) and 1st Team All Region (2022 & 2023). Hussey is the only one in school history to receive all-state recognition in basketball and tennis in the same academic year.

Hussey will be presented the award during the 2024 Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony on March 17 at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott Resort.
Nominees were submitted from across the state to the Jones family for this prestigious award for senior multi-sport athletes who excel equally in their classroom and contribute greatly to their community. “All of the nominees were very deserving, and this is always a difficult decision make each year,” said Wallace “Wah” Jones, Jr.
Jones was a two-sport All-American at the University of Kentucky, playing for legendary coaches Adolph Rupp and Bear Bryant, winning two national championships and an NIT. Jones is the only player at the University of Kentucky to have his jerseys retired in both sports.
In addition to basketball and football, Jones was a pitcher with the Wildcats and a member of the UK track and field team. He won a gold medal in the 1948 Summer Olympics with Rupp’s “Fabulous Five” and the Phillip 66ers. After college Jones went on to play in the National Basketball Association with the Indianapolis Olympians. During his tremendous athletic career Jones was the image of sportsmanship and is respected throughout the world.
