Northern Kentucky may just be dreaming of a white Christmas this year because it’s probably not happening.
Compared to last year’s extreme low temperatures, this year’s Christmas forecast looks vastly different. According to the National Weather Service’s extended outlook, temperatures in NKY are expected to be “likely above” and “leaning above” the normal.
This forecast, which was issued Dec. 14, is for Dec. 22 – 28. In comparison, Dec. 23-25 last year, the high barely hit 17 degrees, and the low dropped down to negative eight.
Average temperatures this time of year typically range from 27 to 45 degrees, per data from the National Weather Service. The forecast is also showing normal levels of precipitation in the region.
This warm weather, the National Weather Service said, is coming from an “El Nino” which is an atmospheric phenomenon that is causing warmer maritime flow from the Pacific Ocean.
However, long-term forecasts are not always accurate, so there is still always hope yet for snow on Christmas (probably not).
