Construction of the new Walton-Verona Schools Intermediate School is progressing in a timely manner, school officials said.
“It’s moving right along,” Walton-Verona Independent Schools Facilities Manager Jeremy Key said during the district’s school board meeting. “They’re currently ahead of schedule.”
The gym front wall is up, the side walls are up and work on the tornado shelters is slated to begin soon, officials said, adding once that work begins, masonry inspection will be continuous.
Slated to house fourth and fifth grade students, the new school will ease overcrowding at existing schools and eventually provide flexibility for future growth, Walton-Verona Independent Schools Superintendent Matt Baker said.Â
While the school district hopes to have a high school located at the athletic complex, Baker said it is not possible right now, though that is a possibility in the future.
“We currently do not have the bonding potential or the capacity to build a new high school at the athletic complex,” Baker said in a video on the school district’s YouTube channel. “But what we can do is get a start on it. When it is needed, we can do an addition to the Intermediate School and add the third grade to that building in a second phase of construction.”
A third phase would convert the Intermediate School to a high school, if that direction is decided upon in the future, Baker said.
