Aspiring artists in Covington can now find potential funding for their projects through a new grant program introduced to enhance public art in the city.

Covington’s Quality of Place Grant program is competitively funded and supports the Economic Development Department’s strategic focus on “Experiencing Covington.” Up to $125,000 has been allocated by the city for the grant this fiscal year. Applicants can request a grant of $1,000 to $30,000.

“The grant is very exciting as it enables citizens, nonprofits – really anyone – to work with the city and spend some money to make our community a better place to live, work and play,” said Kyle Snyder, the program’s manager. “Tying the grant to the new Economic Development manifesto will make it interesting.”

The program will have one grant cycle for the first year, with an application deadline of 4 p.m. on Nov. 18. The application is a five-step process. Artists will begin by pitching their concept, and are encouraged to get “buy-in” from business owners to make their applications “more competitive.”

Artists will then talk to Project Manager Kyle Snyder or Sarah Allan, assistant economic development director, to discuss the proposal. After the project is vetted, artists may submit their completed application by Nov. 18.

A committee of Covington city staff will evaluate submissions, scoring them and recommending the top proposals to the Covington Board of Commissioners. The approved applicants will coordinate with city staff to begin executing their public art piece.
