Alexandria officially swore in longtime city employee Stephanie Tarter as city clerk at Thursday’s city council meeting. Tarter currently works as the assistant city clerk and will assume her new duties on October 1.

“I have no doubt that Stephanie’s going to do a wonderful job,” said councilwoman Susan Vandlandingham.

Tarter will fill the role held by current city clerk Jan Johannemann, who has worked with the city for 16 years and became city clerk in 2018. Johannemann will retire after she concludes her duties as city clerk at the end of the month. Johannemann lives in Alexandria with her husband.

Council members in attendance offered their congratulations and gratitude to Johannemann for her years of service.

“You’re a great organizer and a friendly face,” councilman Tom Baldridge said.

In addition, councilman Kyle Sparks told Johannemann that he truly appreciated “all the hard work you did here. You made me feel comfortable from the second I stepped in the door.”

“I hope you enjoyed your time,” councilman Stacey Graus added. “You can always come back.”

“Jan’s always made me feel welcome,” councilwoman Susan Vandlandingham said.

Johannemann plans on spending time with her family and traveling in her retirement.
