Highlands and Simon Kenton have made girls volleyball hires while Ryle is on the lookout for a new Athletic Director with Mike Woolf stepping down.
Highlands is bringing in Leah Fryman, while Simon Kenton has tabbed Monica Hurd to be the next leader of the program.
Fryman takes over for Jim DeLong, who coached the last three seasons in Fort Thomas and led the Bluebirds to a 73-36 record and three straight 36th District championships. Fryman comes up from the middle school where she coached the sixth grade team.
“We’re excited for her leadership, energy, and commitment to our student-athletes as she takes over the program,” Highlands Athletic Director Wes Caldwell said.

Fryman coached the sixth grade team the past three seasons. Prior to that she was an assistant at Milford High School in Ohio and the head coach at Campbell County and Pendleton County. She’s a Campbell County alum and Camels Hall of Famer and continued her playing career at Centre College.
Hurd enters the mix taking over for longtime coach Amy Marx, who resigned recently after 10 seasons in guiding the program. Marx led the Lady Pioneers to eight district championships and three regional championship game appearances.
Hurd, originally from Louisville, has over 15 years of coaching experience and played collegiately at Union College. She’s coached at both the high school and club levels, including the KIVA, NKYVC and at Union.
“What stands out most about Coach Hurd is her passion for the game, her commitment to developing student-athletes and her vision for growing a successful program,” Simon Kenton Athletic Director Troy Roberts said.
There will be a meet and greet Wednesday night at the high school auditorium to introduce Hurd and open to any student/family interested in playing volleyball.
Woolf is stepping down from the position at Ryle after being the Athletic Director for the past four years. He stepped into the role in 2022.
Prior to the AD role, Woolf was a Ryle’s defensive coordinator in football for 15 years under coach Mike Engler and Bryson Warner. He had also been the head coach for Campbell County’s football program for three seasons from 2018-20.
Those interested in the position should visit employment opportunities on the Boone County Schools website. For additional details, contact Ryle principal Matt Shafer at matt.shafer@boone.kyschools.us.
