Two separate shootings at a Melbourne home earlier this year resulted in attempted murder charges against a Newport man, while investigators say no criminal charges will be filed in the later shooting death of the homeowner.
Both incidents occurred a little over a month apart at 7049 Kohl’s Road in Melbourne.
On Jan. 19 at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers with the Campbell County Police Department responded to a report of shots being fired into a residence at 7049 Kohls Road.
Preston Gill, 19, of Newport, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He is being charged with attempted murder, tampering with physical evidence, retaliating against a participant in the legal process and using restricted ammunition during the commission of a crime.
On Feb. 24, the owner of 7049 Kohls Road, Jared B. Strup Sr., was fatally shot. Per the department, the Jan. 19 shooting was a “significant contributing factor” leading to the death of Strup.
After a review of the case by the Campbell County Attorney’s Office, it was determined that criminal charges are “not warranted at this time” in Strup’s death, according to police.
