A free recreational soccer league for kids in Covington opened its registration window this week.
This will be the first of what city leaders are hoping to be many youth recreational programs to be established through the Covington Recreation Committee, which was formed last year in response to community calls for more youth recreational activities in the city.
The league is free and open to Covington kids in kindergarten through second grade. Covington Commissioner Tim Acri said that was deliberate as that’s an age for which most schools don’t operate sports programs.
FC Cincinnati has agreed to sponsor the league and will be providing free shin guards, cleats and other equipment. Northern Kentucky Street Soccer, a local community group, has agreed to serve as refs and coaches. Local businesses have also offered monetary support in an effort to defray costs.
“Our focus was – let’s try to get something that will spark interest quickly and at least get people to know that the rec commission is serious and that we’re going to move forward,” Acri told LINK nky.
The league will run from April to May, and the committee hopes to establish a fall league, as well. Events will take place at the Holmes Practice Field on Madison Avenue. Acri also said that down the road, the committee hopes to establish similar youth programs for different activities, such as e-sports (i.e. competitive video games) and fishing. Those programs will be announced as they’re established.
Interested Covington families can sign up using the city’s online contact form here until March 9.
