A woman is dead after her vehicle went into the Ohio River Wednesday evening, according to the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.
The coroner’s office told LINK’s media partner, WCPO, Thursday morning that the woman’s death has been ruled an apparent suicide.
Cincinnati police said officers responded to Broadway Avenue and East Mehring Way for reports of a sinking vehicle.
Our crew went to the scene near Great American Ball Park, where police said they were searching for a white SUV in the river, alongside Boone County Water Rescue and several neighboring fire departments.
Cincinnati police told our crew that a person walking on the sidewalk saw the car go into the river and called 911.
Witness statements and surveillance footage confirmed that the car entered the river from a ramp on Broadway Street, according to police.
CPD Lt. Jerome Herring said the Cincinnati Fire Department and dive team crews prepared to enter the water around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Herring said crews would use sonar technology to attempt to find the car.
Just before 11:30 p.m., WCPO’s crew saw the car towed fully out of the river.
