A structural fire took place Wednesday on Fairway Drive in Southgate. Two police officers took charge, controlling the fire with two portable fire extinguishers and a garden hose until the fire department arrived.
At the city council meeting on Wednesday (the day of the fire), Mayor Jim Hamberg honored the two officers for going above and beyond for the city and its safety.
Sergeant Garret Haynes and Officer Nate Snyder were awarded for both bravery and acts above the call of duty by Hamberg and Police Chief John Christmann. They received a combination pin to be worn on their Class A uniforms.
“The quick actions of the officers significantly reduced the severity of the incident,” said Hamberg. “Their heroic and selfless actions prevented the fire from spreading.”
Without the dedication of the police department, Hamberg said that the city wouldn’t have been ranked the second safest city in Kentucky in 2024.
“I just echo that sentiment,” said public safety council member Mark Messmer. “They did a tremendous job. They saved that condominium up there.”
No injuries were noted. The cause of the fire was also not discussed. Updates with more information on the fire will be made as they are available.
