$10,000 donated from the City of Covington late last year has helped about 2,350 Covington get connected to food, City Manager Sharmili Reddy announced this week.
“About 605 Covington households were served, as well,” Reddy told the Board of Commissioners Tuesday Night. “So, all the funds were used for food purchase, not for staff or administrative costs.”
The Covington Board of Commissioners unanimously voted in November to donate $10,000 from the city’s own funds to aid local families in accessing food in the face of the erstwhile federal government shutdown and its impact on SNAP benefits. The donation was Mayor Ron Washington’s idea, and he told the commissioners at the time he was inspired to make the donation after witnessing the number of families seeking food at local service agencies.
The $10,000 was donated specifically to the Horizon Community Fund’s NKY Food Support Fund, which shuttles money to food service agencies. Although the federal shutdown is over, the fund is still active. You can donate to the NKY Food Support Fund here. If you or your family need food, check out our list of local service agencies.
