Assistant Campbell County Attorney Bob List is retiring and was recognized by the fiscal court for his role held since 1990.
Several Campbell County officials spoke at Wednesday’s Campbell County Fiscal Court meeting on List’s behalf.
Campbell County Attorney Steve Franzen said that, in their position, they sometimes deal with tens of thousands of people and sometimes millions of dollars, and there’s a lot of responsibility and precision. Franzen said if he had to sum up List and his legal career, it would be precise.

“Bob, and as you know, my heart sank when he told me, ‘I think I’m going to wind down here,’ but I’m really happy for you,” Franzen said. “I just can’t think of enough nice things to say about what you’ve meant to the county attorney’s office, what you’ve meant to me personally, and again, what you’ve meant to the people of Campbell County.”
List went to Northern Kentucky University for undergrad and then attended Salmon P. Chase College of Law and clerked for Justice Donald Carl Wintersheimer in the Kentucky Supreme Court. In 1989, he was the Assistant City Solicitor in Newport and, in 1990, became Campbell County’s Assistant County Attorney.

“Then you got Bob-you call him, you give him the details, he works through it, he’s got that balance between, ‘I don’t need three weeks to get through the details,’ and hanging up, and you never have to think about it again,” Campbell County Police Chief Craig Sorrell said. “For me, that has been incredible. That’s always the case. I boasted on you about that many times.”
Campbell County Sheriff Mike Jansen attended the meeting and named List an honorary deputy sheriff on behalf of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.
“Every time you come into a room, you command the room with your knowledge, your professionalism and your quietness, and everybody listens,” Jansen said. “You speak, and people listen.”
List received a watch from the county, which is typical of what it does for long-serving and retiring members of Campbell County government. On the back of the watch, “open records king” is engraved.
“I think of you as somebody who’s unflappable,” Campbell County Judge/Executive Steve Pendery said. “If you get excited or angry about something, I’m surprised that you ever would do that. Cool, calm, competent and creating confidence with those traits that is your MO as far as I’m concerned.”
