After nearly 25 years of serving weekly meals to Covington residents, the Saturday Night Community Dinner is seeking a new location as its longtime host site prepares to close.
The dinner, founded at First Christian Church on W. 5th Street and supported by a network of local congregations and volunteers, has operated every Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The church’s decision to sell its building means the ministry must vacate the space at the end of the year, according to a press release. First Christian Church was recently listed for sale.
Organizers said they are seeking a location along or near the Madison Avenue corridor with access to bus service, a certified kitchen, and seating for 60 to 80 people.
Before the pandemic, the dinner regularly served more than 100 guests each week. Attendance now averages 50 to 60, many of whom experience homelessness, fixed incomes, mental illness, addiction or food insecurity. In addition to a hot meal, the weekly gathering provides indoor shelter, rest and access to basic necessities.
The partner churches say a consistent location is critical, especially for guests who rely on foot or public transit. Current partners include Bulletsville Christian Church, Trinity Episcopal, Crescent Springs Presbyterian, Lakeside Presbyterian, First Christian Church, Milford Christian Church, Erlanger Christian Church and community volunteers.
The group is asking for community assistance in identifying a suitable space or joining the volunteer rotation.
