St. Vincent de Paul of Northern Kentucky kicked off its annual Summer Breeze program this week, which involves distributing free electric fans and even air conditioning units to qualifying individuals in the region.

“This program saves lives,” said Karen Zengel, St. Vincent de Paul’s executive director, in a press release. “A cool home is a necessity for many of our neighbors in need living with respiratory illnesses, heart problems or other serious health conditions. Thanks to our generous partners and supporters, we are proud to offer this service and play a vital role in keeping our community healthy as temperatures rise.”

One hundred and ninety-seven air conditioning units and 248 fans, valued at more than $33,000, were distributed last year, according to the organization.

NKY residents can obtain an AC unit or fan at no cost until Aug. 31 or while supplies last. AC units are reserved for residents with serious medical conditions. Interested residents can apply to receive a fan or AC unit by calling the organization’s help line at (859) 341-3219, Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
