  • Tom Brinker
  • Greg Waite

The Independence City Council had nine candidates vying for six open seats.

The city council is the city’s primary legislative body. It institutes local laws, passes a city budget and generally represents the people’s interests in the municipal government. The mayor, whose seat was no up for election this year, can veto laws passed by the council, but the council can vote to override him with a majority vote. Chris Reinersman currently serves as the mayor of Independence. Council positions are nonpartisan, and councilmembers serve two-year terms.

Most of the Independence candidates this year were incumbents: Tom Brinker, Carol Franzen, Dave Shafer, Greg Steffen, Chris Vogelpohl and Greg Waite. The challengers were Chris Barbour, Matt Fehler and Bryan Roemer.

The city council will undergo a new election cycle in 2026.
