The newest version of the Kenton County comprehensive plan is now available.
The county comprehensive plan is required to be updated every five years. It serves as a set of recommendations for zoning and development throughout the county. Although many cities have their own zoning regulations, the comprehensive plan serves as sort of a template for cities to follow to ensure development cohesion between the county’s many jurisdictions.
Public service agencies and organizations also use comprehensive plans when setting policies, and the plan itself touches nearly every aspect of public life from transit to housing to economics to the environment.
The Kenton County Planning Commission approved the plan last week, following months of events for collecting public input.
Many portions of the comprehensive plan have not changed or have changed little, but several areas of focus came out during public input sessions, which the new version of the plan has integrated:
- A need for expanded public transit, especially to key community sites like schools
- Calls for high-quality jobs
- Strategies for insulating the region from economic shock, such as the one experienced during the pandemic
- An ongoing concern about housing, including a need for a more diverse mix of housing and zoning to encourage expanded housing options
- A need for more childcare options
- Generally greater targeted services for under-served populations
