Ruth Johnson is running for Newport city commissioner with a focus on city finances, transparency, neighborhoods and opportunities for younger residents, according to her campaign Facebook.
Johnson has spent her life in Newport, where she attended school, raised her children and built her life. Her campaign emphasizes putting residents first as the city makes decisions about its future.
Johnson faces Robbie Hall, Jacob Harrod, Ruth Johnson, Mike Radwanski, Ken Rechtin, Julie Smith-Morrow and Aaron Sutherland in the Nov. 3 general election.
“Every decision we make today shapes the Newport our children and grandchildren will inherit tomorrow,” Johnson said on her Facebook.
Johnson said she wants city government to ensure every neighborhood receives attention while spending taxpayer dollars carefully and making decisions openly and responsibly.
She also wants Newport to consider the needs of younger generations as the city develops. Johnson said that includes investing in opportunities, supporting strong neighborhoods and creating an environment where young people have reasons to remain in Newport as they grow older.
If elected, Johnson said her priorities would include maintaining safe and welcoming neighborhoods, fiscal responsibility and creating opportunities for the next generation.
