Maria “Cari” McMurtry Garriga is one of seven candidates running for Covington’s new city council. The new council will have six seats.
Garriga had previously run for the Covington Board of Commissioners in 2024 but lost at the ballot box. Originally from Puerto Rico, Garriga has a doctorate in foreign and second language education, serves in both teaching and administrative roles at Thomas More University and is a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She also teaches yoga and meditation.
“I am running to be a pragmatic, transparent voice for our community. My focus will be on safe streets, attainable housing and fiscal responsibility,” Garriga said.
Garriga said that one of her campaign focuses is helping local small businesses by encouraging people to come to Covington, in spite of the region’s many construction projects and closures.
“We need businesses to make Covington their home, and we need patrons to sponsor these businesses,” Garriga said. “While the city’s business landscape is robust and growing, the various construction projects surrounding and expanding beyond the Central Business District may deter visitors, especially if they are not familiar with enhanced parking services and the general quality of our city.”
“I value the diversity of the city’s neighborhoods and its citizens, and I want to represent diverse viewpoints in city council…,” Garriga added. “I work hard, communicate clearly and play well in the sandbox.”
