Ken Rechtin said what motivates him to serve is helping others.

He said although it sounds corny, he thoroughly enjoys being a Newport City Commissioner serving others. Rechtin said he enjoys all aspects from the beginning of a campaign through the actual helping to govern.

Rechtin faces Robbie Hall, Jacob Harrod, Ruth Johnson, Mike Radwanski, Julie Smith-Morrow and Aaron Sutherland in the Nov. 3 general election.

“The interactions with folks are tremendously fulfilling,” Rechtin said. “Even when folks are upset with decisions that were made or actions taken by the city, I try to help folks understand.”

Being present and listening and advocating for citizens on their behalf with other agencies or with the city administration or with businesses, Rechtin said, has always given him a great deal of joy.

Rechtin said he is humbled and honored to have served as many years as he has (over 14 non-consecutive years) for the citizens of Newport as a city commissioner and he hopes to gain their vote again to serve them for two more years.
