Joanne Barnett-Smith is one of 10 candidates running for a spot on the Elsmere City Council. The council has six seats.

Barnett-Smith is an incumbent on the council and has lived in the city since 1974.

“I have seen a lot of changes,” Barnett-Smith said. “Some good, some not so good.”

Barnett-Smith said she would like to focus on bringing more opportunities for kids in the city if reelected.

“The children are the future, and I want them to have a positive experience that they can take with them wherever they go in life,” Barnett-Smith said. “We need to be true to our motto: (Moving Forward and Making Tracks) for a better tomorrow.”

Specifically, Barnett-Smith said, “my first priority is to get the parks back on track for the children growing up in Elsmere and any others that stop by to enjoy them.”

Barnett-Smith admitted that there were certain aspects of government the city council didn’t have a say in. In spite of this, she said, “That will never stop me from asking questions and being out there finding the truth and making it work for our citizens.”
