Brenna Penrose is running for a seat on the Boone County Schools Board of Education in the 2026 general election as an invested mother of two children in the district.

The five-member school board oversees Boone County Schools, one of Kentucky’s largest public school districts. Each board member represents a geographic division of the county and serves a four-year term.

The vacancy is created by Board Member Karen Byrd, who has served on the board for nearly three decades. There are two candidates, an incumbent and a challenger, vying for the board’s Division 4 seat this year.

Penrose has served Boone County Schools for more than a decade in various roles, including school-based decision-making councils and Family Resource Center advisory committees. She has also contributed to district initiatives including the Superintendent Ambassador Program, Portrait of a Graduate Committee and school redistricting.

Her first priority if elected would be to learn about current issues facing the district like redistricting and facilities management.

“As a disabled minority, I bring a unique perspective and a commitment to ensuring every student and family feels heard, respected, and included,” Penrose said.
