Queer Kentucky, an independent publication focused on LGBTQ+ issues in the commonwealth, has secured a nomination from GLAAD for Outstanding Independent Journalism. GLAAD is a well-known LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization.
“This nomination is a recognition of what local queer journalism can do when it’s trusted, resourced and allowed to tell the truth,” said Missy Spears, executive director of Queer Kentucky and Covington resident. “Our work exists because Kentucky’s LGBTQ+ communities deserve coverage that is accurate, affirming and unafraid.”
Queer Kentucky covers issues throughout the state, but much of its operations are based in Northern Kentucky. Recently, they launched a bill tracking feature, aimed at informing its audience of statehouse legislation particularly affecting queer Kentuckians.
“Too often, stories from states like Kentucky are ignored or flattened,” founder and Editor in Chief Spencer Jenkins said. “This nomination affirms that our stories matter nationally — and that queer people here are shaping the broader conversation.”
The winners of the awards will be announced later this year at GLAAD’s annual awards ceremony. You can learn more about Queer Kentucky at queerkentucky.com.
