Publix Super Markets will open a new branch in Independence, according to an official statement on Monday.

The store will be located on the Northeast corner of Harris Pike and Madison Pike. The building will span about 48,000 square feet and employ about 140 people, according to the press release.

Independence City Council approved a zoning change for the 19-acre plot of land for in November by a 5-1 vote. Council Member Greg Steffen was the only council member to vote against the zoning change, which allowed the North-Carolina-based developer Crosland Southeast to develop the land for commercial purposes. The developer has aided in developing other Publix locations throughout the NKY region, such as the Triple Crown Shopping Center in Boone County. The land had been previously zoned as a neighborhood area.

Discussions from last year indicated that in addition to the grocery store, the developer hoped to include an attached liquor store, a separate drive-thru restaurant and retail building, access streets to both Madison and Harris as well as parking lots. LINK nky has reached out to Publix to confirm if these details are still true.
