The emergency repair of Brent Spence Bridge has earned another award.
The bridge, which spans the Ohio River between Covington and Cincinnati, houses interstates 71 and 75, and carries more than 160,000 cars daily. In November 2020, a truck carrying chemicals was involved in a wreck with another semi-trailer, causing a fire in the middle of the bridge. It was determined that the demage was confined to a 200-foot span of the bridge where the fire occurred, and an emergency repair took place. The bridge reopened in December 2020, one day ahead of schedule.
That repair effort has claimed several awards, the most recent from the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE). The group named the Brent Spence Bridge repair the 2021 National Project of the Year Under $20 Million
Prior to the national ASHE award, the project earned sectional awards and the Great Lakes Region ASHE Transportation Improvement Award in the category of Construction Cost $5 million and Under.
The project also has received national awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies, the American Public Works Association and Engineering News-Record.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray said the ASHE award was “a great credit to our engineers and a host of partners, all of whom worked day and night to restore one of the most important river crossings in the eastern United States.”
