City Council will consider a proposed increase in city property tax at Tuesday’s council meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m., Sept. 2, at the City Building.
The proposed levy will raise the current tax rate by $0.06 per $1,000 of assessed property value, from $3.72 to $3.78 per $1000, the Enquirer is reporting, which represents a 4% increase in total property tax revenue.
“The
members of City Council approved an increase of 4 percent in revenue
when they adopted the annual budget,” City Administrator Don Martin told the Enquirer. “The rate, at that time,
was not known because the tax rolls had not yet been received from the
Propery Valuation Administrator.”
The proposed increase would bump the city’s property tax revenue from the $4.42 million budgeted for 2013 to $4.616 million budgeted for this year.
“The cost to provide necessary services to our residents increases every year,” Martin told FTM in an email on Friday. “COLA’s (cost-of-living-adjustments) for employees, health insurance costs… general liability insurance, utility bills, maintenance of improved park facilities, etc., all contribute to the increased costs.”
The proposed increase had its first reading on August 26, a meeting the Enquirer also reports had no public attendance. Tuesday’s second reading will initiate a vote on the measure.
