Aileen Okura said she is seeking reelection to Southgate City Council to continue working to keep the city safe and welcoming while strengthening communication with residents.

A Southgate resident for 30 years, Okura said she has enjoyed working with the mayor and fellow council members and wants to continue supporting the city’s Public Works, Police and Fire departments.

Okura faces Alec Angel, Jackson Curry, Elizabeth Hartman, Jason Lanham, Daniel J. Speier, Tommy Whitehead and Phyllis A. Yeager in the Nov. 3 election.

“My motivation to work in public service stems from my desire to learn, listen, and share information with others,” Okura said.

Okura serves as council’s liaison to the Park and Tree Board and as chair of Read Ready Southgate, an early literacy initiative for preschool-age children. She said she also works to encourage residents to volunteer and participate in community events.

If reelected, Okura said her first priority would be keeping residents informed and encouraging greater participation in city government. She wants residents to follow city communications, attend council meetings and share their concerns with elected officials.

Okura said she also wants to continue organizing family-friendly community activities, including the Southgate Pumpkin Walk, Plant Sale, Arbor Day Celebration and Family Day.

Supporting local businesses is another priority. Okura said she wants to continue promoting businesses through the city’s Small Business Spotlight and encourage residents to support them.
