Dan Speier said he is running for Southgate City Council as a way to give back to the community where he has lived his entire life.

Speier previously served on Southgate City Council from 2007 to 2020 and has served on the Southgate Code Enforcement Board since 2021. He has also served as treasurer of the Southgate Wilder Emergency Medical Service Board since 2013.

Speier faces Alec Angel, Jackson Curry, Elizabeth Hartman, Jason Lanham, Aileen Okura, Tommy Whitehead and Phyllis Yeager in the Nov. 3 general election.

“I am running for city council as a way to give back to my community that has given me so much,” Speier said.

Speier has worked at an area children’s hospital for 29 years and previously coached basketball and baseball for children attending Southgate and St. Therese schools.

If elected, Speier said one priority would be reviewing each city department’s budget to identify opportunities to save money.

Speier said he has also heard from residents who would like more things to do in Southgate and wants to develop ideas for community activities that bring residents together.

Speier said he hopes to draw on his previous council experience, current community involvement and professional background to help guide his work on council.
