For the second straight year, Beechwood has claimed small school supremacy against the rest of the state in volleyball.
The Tigers swept through competition in Owensboro to win back-to-back All “A” state titles. They started their journey on Friday in pool play competition and mowed everyone down through Saturday once it reached bracket play.
To open play on Friday, they took down Sayre 2-0 (25-12, 25-5) and Ballard Memorial 2-0 (25-12, 25-17). They continued pool play Saturday morning and defeated Eminence 2-0 (25-11, 25-10) to earn a No. 1 seed for bracket play later in the day on Saturday.
They were matched up with Metcalfe County to open up the 8-team championship bracket. They won that match 2-0 (25-14, 25-9) before taking on NKY foe Bishop Brossart in the semifinals. Beechwood again won a two-setter, (25-17, 25-10) to advance to the championship where they’d face Louisville Holy Cross.
In the championship match they were tested as the match went the distance to three sets, Beechwood taking it 2-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-10).
All-tournament selections for Beechwood were MVP Isabel O’Brien, Macy Armstrong, Skylr Estep, Rachel Lewandowski and Kennedy Sturgeon. Bishop Brossart’s Aubrey Rebholz and Josie Reckner also made teh All-tournament team.
The six wins improved Beechwood to 18-1 on the season, the lone loss to the No. 1 team in the state, Assumption. In their 18 wins, they’ve defeated five ranked teams in No. 5 St. Henry (according to the latest KVCA rankings), No. 9 Lexington Catholic, No. 24 Covington Holy Cross (twice) and No. 24 Louisville Holy Cross. They still have St. Henry, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 6 North Oldham on the regular season schedule before postseason play begins.
