Silver Grove accepted a $59,000 bid from Riegler Blacktop to repave West Fourth Street at this week’s city council meeting.
On Thursday, Aug. 8, Silver Grove City Council approved the bid from Riegler Blacktop to redo the asphalt foundation and surfacing for the entirety of West Fourth Street, which is roughly 800 feet long and 26-30 feet wide of residential street.

“The bid for $59,000 provides more work and a better road for a lack of a better term,” said Mayor Neal Bedel.
While the city received many bids for the project, Bedel recommended city council to accept the highest bid because the end result would last longer.
“We probably should take the highest bid because it’ll be a more quality job,” Bedel said. “A lot lower bids than what I thought it was going to be because we budgeted $200,000 for this and it’s only going to be around $60,000.”
The project calls for the removal of the existing pavement, debris, and other unusable materials found on the project site without disturbing the sidewalks and residential driveways. The project will not extend the street and will taper to fit within the sidewalks and project limits.
Bid applications were opened on Thursday, June 11 and closed on Wednesday, July 15, of this year.
Some bids suggested drilling two feet into the existing pavement, leaving the original foundation and asphalting the top of the road. Riegler Blacktop suggested drilling 10 feet deep to help build a new foundation of asphalt, extending the road’s possible lifespan.
With a deeper base, the road is expected to last roughly 15-20 years before discussions of another repavement or cementing are necessary.
“It makes perfect sense,” said Councilmember Julie Ziegler.
The repavement project will start this fall with tentative dates for construction to come.
