A new Kentucky law is now in effect to help keep children safe as they get on and off school and church buses.
Effective July 15, drivers coming from either direction on all roads must stop for a school or church bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing.
There is one exception.
If you are driving in the opposite direction on a highway with four or more lanes, and the road is divided by a raised barrier or unpaved median, you do not have to stop. A median is the strip of ground that separates the two sides of a road.
The law also changed how violations are enforced.
If a driver illegally passes a stopped bus and police cannot determine who was behind the wheel, the vehicle’s registered owner or the person leasing it is treated as the driver unless they can show someone else was driving.
