At the February 24, 2026, City Council meeting, the City of Florence and the Florence Police Department will recognize Robert Nelson for 23 years of dedicated volunteer service through the Volunteers in Police Service program.
For nearly a quarter of a century, Mr. Nelson has committed his time, energy, and skills in support of the Florence Police Department and the broader community. His service represents one of the longest-standing commitments within the City’s VIPS program and reflects an exceptional level of civic dedication.
The Volunteers in Police Service program allows community members to partner directly with law enforcement in meaningful and impactful ways. VIPS participants assist with community events, administrative and logistical support, and other operational functions that enhance public safety efforts. By providing this support, volunteers allow sworn officers to remain focused on critical enforcement and emergency response responsibilities while strengthening relationships between the department and the community.
“Robert’s 23 years of service reflect the very best of Florence,” said Mayor Julie Aubuchon. “Public safety is not the responsibility of law enforcement alone. It is strengthened when residents step forward as partners. Robert’s commitment demonstrates what true civic leadership looks like, and we are deeply grateful for the example he has set for our community.”
Mr. Nelson’s sustained service has supported countless events and initiatives over the years. His consistency, reliability, and professionalism have made a lasting impact on the Florence Police Department and the residents it serves.
The city extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Nelson and to all members of the VIPS program whose volunteer efforts help keep Florence safe, connected, and engaged.
