Seniors on Campbell County’s team were in fifth grade the last time the Camels held up the 37th District trophy.

Fast forward nearly seven years, and that same group has now brought the title back to Claryville. Campbell County claimed a 3-2, double-overtime victory over Bishop Brossart at the Mustang Athletic Complex Thursday.

In the second extra five-minute period, sophomore Jonas Toy took on a throw-in where he flicked a header that somehow found its way into the goal, sending the Camels and their fans into a frenzy.

“I was hoping that we would get a goal in the first few minutes,” said tournament MVP and senior goalkeeper Jacob Rawe. “That was a big relief off my chest. I couldn’t help but run down there and celebrate with them. So proud of them.”

Rawe and the Camels’ defense once again kept the Mustangs in check, a key factor in ending the program’s seven-year district title drought.

Campbell County’s offense did its job early, with both first-half goals coming off corner kicks from Josh Bloomfield. The first came within the opening five minutes from Cam Gobich, and the second followed in the 20th minute from Greyson Ballinger.

Brossart’s goals came from Max Runge in the 36th minute and Ben Sweeney in the 47th.

Joining Rawe on the All-Tournament Team for Campbell County were Carlos Marquez, Cam Gobich and Fin Brown. For Brossart, Runge, Luke Neltner and Kyle Piscitello earned All-Tournament honors.

The win sends Campbell County (9-8-2) into the 10th Region Tournament as one of three district champions, joining Mason County and Montgomery County. Two of the three will get a first round bye.

Bishop Brossart (13-7-1), meanwhile, will enter as a one of three runner-ups along with Pendleton County and George Rogers Clark.
