The body found in a wooded area in Bellevue has been there for several months or longer, the Bellevue Police Department said.

Police said the area is between the Kroger location on Donnermeyer Drive and Retreat Street.

The cause of death is unknown, and cannot be determined until an autopsy can be done, police said.

Constance Bray, 21, works at the Gold Star nearby.

Bray said there’s been a smell for the past two to three weeks, but her friends who previously called the police were told it was a deer. Bray said she and her friend went to the area around 5:30 p.m. to explore where the smell was coming from when she discovered the body and called the police.

Bray described the trail nearby as the “easy access to get to Kroger” and a place where “everyone walks.”

According to police, residents in the area might still smell an odor due to a dead deer located close to the remains, but given the amount of time the remains had been there, there was no odor coming from them.

The Campbell County Crime Scene Team was called in to help investigate, police said, and they have been in contact with families reviewing active missing persons cases. Police said they are confident it was an isolated incident with no threat to the public.
