Gov. Andy Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Thursday in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
A joint resolution of Congress, approved Oct. 1, 1962, designated May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as “Police Week.” This observance pays tribute to local, state and federal peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
Why are flags flown at half-staff?
“Kentucky’s law enforcement officers deserve our gratitude every day, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice especially deserve to be honored and remembered each and every day,” said Beshear in a press release. “Please take some extra time this week to let those who protect and serve your community know that you care about them.”
Beshear encourages individuals, businesses and organizations throughout the commonwealth to join in this tribute by lowering their flags to half-staff.
