On June 12, 1875, Here’s What the Covington Journal Reported

 

 

The Star Base Ball club of this city has come off victorious in every contest this season. It has met only to conquer two clubs at Louisville, and one each at Frankfort, Lexington, Paris and Maysville. Its banners float in the gentle June breeze, crowned with the wreaths of victory. 

 

 

At the Council meeting on Thursday night an ordinance was introduced providing for the demolition of that venerable structure known as the Lower Market house, and the distinguished citizen from the First Ward promptly voted for its passage, but it was laid over. 

 

 

The work of clearing off the lot on Madison Street, opposite the Clinton Hotel, recently purchased by the First National Bank, for the purpose of erecting thereon a banking house, has been commenced. When we state that the estimated cost of the projected bank building is between $75,000 and $100,000, it will be seen that a fine structure is complicated–a credit to the bank and an ornament to the city. 

 

We learn that it is the intention of the Gas Company next season to put up a building on the adjoining lot north of the bank lot, for use of the company.  We have not heard anything as to the style of the contemplated building, perhaps it is not yet determined; but the prosperous Gas Company will doubtless vie with the First National in planning a building which will be creditable alike to itself and the city of Covington.  

 

Work on the large tobacco warehouse on Scott Street, immediately north of the Northern Bank is steadily progressing. It will be a substantial building, four stories high, with a handsome front.  

 

The walks on the new Catholic school-house on Seventh Street, are nearly completed.

 

There is no movement yet in the way of work on the Federal building. We have, however, the assurance of the Supervising Architect that work will be commenced on an early day. 

 

 

Martha Thomas was indicted as a nuisance for keeping a house at 605 Main Street at which disorderly, profane and obscene persons congregate, and at which noise and obscenity and indecent exposure of persons take place. 

 

There were three separate charges of selling alcohol to minors, each levied with a $50 fine. 

 

John Dean was charged with shooting at another with an intent to kill along with possession of a deadly weapon and Frank Stittebeck and Anthony Hellman were charged with a malicious cutting of B. Hageman.
