No licenses were issued to medical cannabis businesses in Boone, Kenton or Campbell counties in the state’s first license lottery, the results of which were released on Monday.
In total, 16 cultivator licenses and 10 processor licenses were issued during the state’s first license lottery round. No licenses for dispensaries, where someone can buy medical cannabis with their state-issued card, were issued anywhere. New rounds of licensing will occur in the future.
“The lottery system is an approach that was adopted after reviewing best practices from other states that have an established medical cannabis market,” said Sam Flynn, executive director of the Office of Medical Cannabis in a press release. “Since day one, our primary goal was to make the application and selection process as fair and transparent as possible. The Kentucky Lottery Corp. has been doing this for a long time, and we appreciate their professionalism and support in helping us carry out this endeavor.”
The law established five kinds of allowable facilities: cultivating centers where the cannabis would be grown, processing facilities where the plants are refined for medical use, hybrid facilities where both cultivation and processing would take place, dispensaries and safety facilities where products are tested to ensure they’re safe to use.
