The Campbell County Police Department uses volunteers for tasks such as delivering documents and driving police cars back and forth for maintenance.

The program is called Volunteer in Police Services. Volunteers help with things that aren’t directly law enforcement duties, which the department said saves time and money versus having officers do those things.

Bruce Siry has been a volunteer since November 2011 and was recognized by the Campbell County Fiscal Court with a certificate of appreciation for his work upon retiring.

Campbell County Police Department Major Jeremy Newberry said when he first started at the police department, one of their morning responsibilities was to go to Newport and pick up mail or drop off items at the district court. He said that once the department started the Volunteer in Police Services program, it never looked back.

“What the VIPs do is extend the reach of the department and really save us all money,” Campbell County Judge/Executive Steve Pendery said. “They make things a little more frictionless, a little more smooth, and put in hundreds of hours in total in order to do that.”

Newberry said Siry has been one of the longest-serving volunteers in the program.

“We greatly appreciate the countless hours you have devoted to helping us serve the citizens of Campbell County,” Newberry read from the certificate. “Your careful attention, thoughtful interactions and willingness to assist in all matters, great and small, have significantly contributed to the success of our agency. Your dedication, professionalism and outstanding performance reflect great credit upon you. We want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation for your commitment and dedication to such an important endeavor.”
