Florence Chief of Police Jeff Mallery announced two promotions within the department during a city council meeting Monday evening.

A member of the police department for over 20 years, Lieutenant Nathan Rettig, was promoted to the position of police captain. Rettig has held the positions of officer, corporal, sergeant and lieutenant.

Rettig was the sergeant in charge of the community resource division and was involved in many specialties, including working as a training officer, a member of the SWAT team, a range instructor, a TASER instructor and an accident reconstructionist.

“Nathan is a graduate of the Northwestern command school, and we are very fortunate to have him [in] the department,” Mallery said.

Rettig’s wife, four kids, parents, in-laws and brother were all in attendance for the induction.

Sergeant Mike Geis was also promoted during the meeting to the rank of police lieutenant. Geis has been a member of the police department for over 16 years, starting in Lexington. Geis has held the rank of officer, corporal and sergeant and served as a field training officer, member of the SWAT team, firearms instructor and active shooter instructor.

“We look forward to his future [in the police department],” Mallery said.

Geis’ family was also in attendance, including his two kids, wife, nephew, in-laws, parents, sister, brother and nephews.

“Here we do think of our employees as family and we are happy that you have shared them with us and we are so excited about these promotions and look forward to the great things they will do for our department,” Florence Mayor Julie Metzger Aubuchon said.
