City commissioners provided an update on the ongoing firehouse update project in Taylor Mill at their bimonthly meeting on Dec. 13.
The firehouse, which has been a controversial topic as of late, is currently under the planning process to fix issues that were first noticed in 2020. The issues plaguing the building include structural issues, water damage and asbestos.
At Wednesday’s meeting, the commission voted to approve two contracts for Hub + Weber and Mark Spaulding. The contract with Spaulding will allow the company to provide the city with bid-ready documents that will allow the city to “put this firehouse out to bid,” according to the commission. The commission anticipates the documents to be prepared by the end of December.
“I’m happy with the way the progress is going, it’s actually moving faster than we anticipated,” said Fire Chief Fernbach at the meeting. “It’s really good for the community. It’s also good for the department.”
The city commission also approved a reimbursement of $1,925.20 to Margaret Freeman for a private cost share to address a stormwater issue. Other matters discussed at the meeting include several promotions and onboarding within city services, such as Assistant Chief General Fernbach being promoted to Fire Chief and Assistant foreman.
Taylor Mill’s next City Commission meeting will take place Wednesday, January 10 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
