LUDLOW FOOTBALL

They were partying in Ludlow like it was 1975 on Friday night at James Rigney Stadium.

The Panthers won a district championship with a 38-13 victory over Holy Cross, going undefeated in Class A, 4th District play.

The win was their fifth straight as they improved to 6-3 on the season and have earned at least two home playoff games as long as they win the opener over Bellevue.

In the 38-13 victory, Miles Garrett was the offensive standout with 225 yards (150 rushing, 75 receiving) and three touchdowns. Jackson Mays threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns while Aiden Smith-Baxley had 63 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. Ethan Powell had the other receiving touchdown for the Panthers.

Matt Brock was the standout defensively with nine tackles, two tackles for loss, a half sack and two fumble recoveries as the Panthers forced three turnovers. Powell had an interception with four tackles while Matthew Engel had 1.5 sacks.

Ludlow concludes their regular season on Friday with a road game at Paris.

BISHOP BROSSART BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

The boys came down to a hundredth of a second for the team title. Bishop Brossart and Villa Madonna tied for first place at 46 points, but Bishop Brossart won the tiebreaker because the sixth runner finished 30th compared to 42nd for the Vikings. This marked the first region championship for the Mustangs since 2014.

Bishop Brossart senior Nathan Ruth won the individual crown in 16:36.66 after finishing second last year. Ruth improved on last year’s time of 16:52.71 by just more than 16 seconds.

Brossart junior Griffin Hill crossed the finish line in ninth in 17:50.58. The Mustangs took the 11th through 13th spots. Senior Nick Heck, freshman Colin Glasgow and eighth grader Sam Vandewater ran the race in 17:57.78, 17:59 and 18:00.52, respectively.

Brossart senior Ryan Clines crossed the finish line in 30th place in 19:12.04.

The Mustangs head to the Class A state meet on Oct. 28 at the Kentucky Horse Park. The boys Class A meet is 10 a.m.

SCOTT VOLLEYBALL

The ‘small but mighty’ motto helped the Scott volleyball team prevail for a 37th District championship on Oct. 19, their first since 2020.

The Eagles knocked off No. 1 seed Campbell County, 3-2 (25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 18-25, 15-13) at Bishop Brossart High School.

Scott recorded 48 kills as Milyn Minor put down 14 and Brooklyn Helm had eight as the Eagles hit a lot of different areas to keep the Camels guessing defensively. Scott’s lone senior in Brooke Balsley and sophomore Morgan Justice had eight kills each and Payton Grigsby had seven to go with 10 digs and three aces. Even setter Ryann Grigsby recorded three kills, finishing the first game on a setter dump.

Scott even made some things happen at the net with 16 blocks. Balsley and Justice had two solo blocks and five assisted each. Payton Grigsby had one solo and three assisted blocks with Minor blocking one solo and assisting two others with Helm assisting four blocks.

Balsley’s last block ended the game. Tied at 11 in the fifth set after Campbell County senior Emma Manser landed an ace, Minor had a kill and the Camels committed a double hit violation to give the Eagles a 13-11 lead. After a bad pass, Justice landed a kill to give the Eagles match point. Camels senior middle blocker Lexi Scharold landed a kill to trim the lead to 14-13. The Camels then tried to hit one over, but Balsley put it down.

Scott finished with 41 digs, 10 aces and 45 assists. Libero Elise Manhardt dug up 13 balls to go with three aces. Helm added three aces and six digs with Minor digging up seven balls and Ryann Grigsby contributing 41 assists.

The Eagles followed up the district title with a 10th Region quarterfinal victory over Bourbon County on Monday. They play Bracken County in the semifinals on Wednesday.

RYLE GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Ryle’s girls won the Class 3A, Region 5 meet for the fifth time in the last seven years with a 21-point difference over runner-up Notre Dame. The Raiders had its top five place in the top 16 spots at Sherman Elementary on Oct. 21.

Junior Allison Kopser, who won the individual crowns in 2021 and 2019 as a freshman and eighth grader, led the way taking third in 20:04.66 and eighth grader Stella Carpenter took fourth in 20:37.49.

The only senior that ran for Ryle in Stella Aschermann took seventh in 20:49.60 and junior Isabelle Morin finished right behind her in eighth in 20:53.80. The Raiders pair of eighth grader Julie Morin and freshman Aubrey Poore placed 17th and 18th in 21:31.27 and 21:33.62, respectively.

Ryle looks to carry over the success into the Class 3A state meet on Oct. 28 at the Kentucky Horse Park, the girls meet starting at 3:45 p.m.
