The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Sunday morning traffic crash that resulted in two sheriff’s deputies and a Verona man being hospitalized.
At approximately 12:38 a.m., Deputies Jerald Wilmes and Clayton Dennison were responding to a service call in Wilmes’ sheriff’s office vehicle traveling northbound on Dixie Highway with emergency equipment activated, according to a sheriff’s office media release.
As the cruiser, which Wilmes was operating, approached Frogtown Road, a 2009 Chevrolet Impala driven by Kenneth Turner, 77, of Verona, pulled out of a nearby parking lot to enter the southbound lane of Dixie Highway, according to the media release.
Wilmes attempted to but could not avoid a collision, resulting in the front end of Turner’s vehicle being struck. Wilmes and Dennison sustained minor injuries, were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood and later released, according to a release.
Turner was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence for treatment of his
minor injuries and was admitted, according to the media release, which added that through the investigation, deputies learned Turner was suspected of operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
Turner was ultimately charged and issued a citation for driving under the influence, first offense and first degree criminal mischief, according to the media release.
