Furry friends and their humans gathered Saturday afternoon to celebrate the opening of SFC James Bishop Memorial Dog Park in Covington.

The event featured music, activities, food trucks, a costume contest and — of course — lots of dogs.

The dog park is named after James Bishop, a 1993 Holmes High School graduate and Army sergeant who died will serving in Iraq in 2006.

The park ”features high-end decorative fencing, separate areas for small and large dogs, plenty of seating for patrons to sit while watching their dogs, and a waste station so dog owners don’t have to worry about bringing waste bags from home,” according to a press release from the city.

The park is located at 9th and Philadelphia streets in Covington.
